Wondering as of September 2022 if my licensed copy of Micrografx Picture Publisher v8 from C 1997 can be made to run under Windows 10 (or if there is a later or tweaked version of PP that will run there) - I currently run mine on an offline Windows Vista machine with very few snags - mostly video issues where parts of the work area go grey during operations such as freehand selection until I manage to refresh the display with a zoom in/out etc. I have been using PP for maybe 28+ years and love its features. I have tried unsuccessfully to persuade myself to learn to use my licensed copy of PS Elements - the learning curve compared with the familiarity of PP is too punishing, and I am not convinced that PSE would prove worth the effort (though it does have one alpha channel per layer compared with one shared across all objects in PP). Also looking to connect with any community of PP users. Thanks!
Gerry, Oddly enough, I have been able to run both versions 8 and 10 on my Win10, however, I have a friend who bought a new PC that came with Win 10 and her copy of MG v. 10 will not run smoothly on her PC.
Yvette, Thank you for your reply and apologies re this delayed response - notification lost in email. Good and bad news all in one, but am glad that you are able to run MG PP on your WIn10 system - magic! I've tried installing on Win10 again, having forgotten much in the meantime. I can execute the PP8 CD Autoplay in Admin mode, but once I chose the "Install" option I see no further progress. Did you install versions 8 and 10 from CD, and do you have any suggestions on how else I might attempt installation on my Win10 system? Thanks, and ahppy times with MG PP to you! Gerry
Yvette, I am quite good at Micrografx for a beginner as I have been using it for 10 years. I have only run into 1 brand of machine that won't run after installing it on Windows 10 and 11 over those years. The culprit's that won't run Picture Publisher 10 are my newest Intel NUC9 and NUC12 with i7 CPU's. I bought a copy of Pic Pub 6 Draw but it came right up and said I needed the 64 bit version. $4 down the drain I have always been able to run Pic Pub 10 under Windows 8 compatabilty mode until now. I don't look forwad\rd to learning a new graphics program.
Joebloggs, and the new version from Corel is offered on a lot of sights as the best replacement for Piic Pub 10, but is actually nothing lie it. I was disappointed.
Hi Bill Kocher,
Please see the longer comment I have just posted (9/17/2022) - I've been a big fan of PP since the mid 90s, am still using PPv8 on an offline Vista PC with few snags, and would really love to be able to run this under Windows 10 via tweaks or a with a later PP version etc. Any Win10 help gratefully received! Also interested in sharing tips, questions, what-have-you... Please reply in order to exchange email addresses if interested?
Best,
Gerry
I have used Picture Publisher since the early days, but have managed to get it to work under Win 10. The pictures broke up, then I found someones instructions to make settings change that sorted that out so I can still use it. the only problem I still find is using clone tool, the speed of movement is too fast so it takes effort to use it.
Shame such a good program was killed by Corel in favour of their own program.
I have used Picture Publisher 8 and loved it. I even used the German version I wish I could still use it with Windows 10. I can't find anything that would let me do what Picture Publisher did.
I have been using Micrografx Pic Pub 10 since it came out. I recently bought a used computer with Windows 7 Home Premium OS ( the same as my previous computer).
The clone tool leaves a path when moved, erasing what was under it.
I can't use it. 'All Masking' removes the erasing effect. I tried
changing the compatibility to Windows XP and Vista but no go.
Can you help me?
I managed to hold on to this program through 3 computers. Sadly, when computer #4 crashed, it took the program with it and I've been severely missing it for three years, until now.
Most of what PhotoShop does, this does simpler. The output in some cases is not of as high quality, but unless you're planning to put your face on a better body and mean to fool folks with it, the quality is high enough. Get it while you can!
Totally agree. I for one use Picture Publisher 8 on an almost daily basis for creating graphic material of varying kinds on a semi-professional basis for various non-profit projects, getting nothing but good comments on the stuff i put out and much appreciation for quick turn-outs almost no matter what the request is. No way i could do this in a hurry (if at all, sometimes...) with the less-than intuitive user interface and in comparison meager creative capabilities of the out-of-the-box Photoshop CS i have on hand but seldom use. PP 10 can be made to run fairly stable at least up to Win 7 Home Premium SP3 with 3rd party patches if you paste it manually in the (x86) directory and allow Windows to search online for solutions to the startup problem that will occur at first. The bugs in PP are irritating but can be somewhat handled by saving work often to keep losses to a minimum when it crashes - seems like it breaks mostly under the pressure of keeping long work lists and running many complex macros in a row on a picture, crowding the RAM of the computer. To me, Picture Publisher is kind of the missing link between Corel Draw and Adobe Photoshop, still ahead of the competition. Btw, Adobe is dropping the support for 8bf type filters in Photoshop, which makes another reason for keeping your PP running as long as possible.
Lightweight, intuitive, better than Photoshop. It has all the functions for editing pictures, import from scanner, textures, clone, work with layers, objects, etc.
Excellent! Lightweight, intuitive, better than Photoshop. I've been using it for 8 years, from version 7 to 10. It has all the functions for editing pictures, import from scanner, textures, clone, work with layers, objects, etc.
A pity it has disappeared!
Forgot to mention - Picture Publisher will only install automatically up to Win XP, but it can be manually installed in at least some later versions, including 64-bit based. Be aware though, that this requires some skills a step above average computer knowledge. You have to look up and install patches and it´s a totally manual job to get it running. Also, some features will not work correctly.
Well, it´s quite odd that a long-since out-of-sale program gets a push but still i don´t hesitate to agree. I will never let go of my aged CD:s containing various versions of this gem. Photoshop may be the mainstream image manipulation tool of choice just like docusoaps are the mainstay of television by now, but PP in its later versions (10 was the final one) still remains rather unique in some functions (OLE support for easy image extraction/transition to or from other programs is one) and tooling and is by far faster in workflow if you take the time to get the hang of it. Shame on Corel for deleting it instead of fixing the bugs which always was its weakest spot. Guess they never understood the potential and just saw it as a competitor to Corel Draw and wanted it out of the way.
Picture Publisher was the only editor that could compare with Adobe, in fact, some features were even better and globally it was much easier to use than Adobe. Why Micrografx lets it go to Corel is a riddle knowing that Coral had its own editor (not very good) but was going to simplify PP right away. Just for eliminating challengers I guess . Anyway, this soft is greatly missing and I think many users would like to see Micrografx take it back or at least republish PP9 in a compatible version from Vista to Win 8. But I suppose this is a lost dream!
It Came out many years ago free in side of a computer mag.
The company got taken over by Corel Draw
